Ranging from around $3000 to over $25,000 for a large solar panel and battery system, the cost of a solar system will depend on many factors. These include:
- The size of the solar system
- Whether you get a battery
- The type of panels, inverters and battery used
- The brands you choose
- The structure of your home and roof
- Your eligibility for a solar rebate
A common size solar panel system is 6.6kW (around 15 panels) which is usually suitable for households of 3-5 people. As a benchmark, these systems often start from around $5000, however prices can vary depending on your installer. For example, RACV Solar offers 6.6kW solar systems from $3560*.
How long is the payback for solar panels?
The cost of a solar system has decreased significantly in the last 10-15 years. At the same time, solar panels have become increasingly efficient and electricity prices are rising.
Generally, a good-quality 6.6kW solar system can now pay for itself in around 5 years or less for the average family home. Most solar panels are designed to last 25 years or more on your roof and come backed by warranties to match.
How much is the solar rebate in Victoria?
A solar rebate can help reduce the upfront cost of a solar system for eligible households.
As at February 2025, Solar Victoria offers rebates of up to $1400 for the installation of solar panel systems, along with interest-free loans to the same value. While there is no rebate for solar batteries, eligible households can access an interest-free loan of up to $8800 for a battery system.
