All-electric homes are considered gold-standard these days, and the way of the future.
Australia is committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050 and, to speed up the transition, the Victorian Government is phasing out new gas connections for new dwellings, apartment buildings, and residential subdivisions.
So what is electrification, and why are so many switching off gas for good?
Going all-electric: What you need to know
Victorian homes use more gas than any other state or territory in Australia, with heating, hot water and cooking the most common uses. However, there are three main drawbacks:
- Price: Gas can be more expensive than electricity - gas bills have increased by over $500 for the average Victorian household in less than two years.
- Environment: Gas is a fossil fuel and household carbon emissions are the fifth largest contributor to Australian greenhouse gases.
- Health: Studies have shown gas appliances, like cooktops and heaters, can be a major source of indoor air pollution.
All-electric homes are households that are completely powered by electricity, with no gas or other fuel sources.
Switching to all-electric is a gradual journey for most. Unless you're building or renovating, many start with solar and then look at replacing their gas appliances with efficient, electric alternatives as they reach their end of life.
To be prepared, it pays to do your research now and understand your options so you can choose the right appliances for you when it comes time to upgrade.
So, where to start?
Take stock of which appliances in your home use gas. Read up on the merits of the electric alternatives for each, such as heat pump hot water systems and induction cooktops, and find out if there are any rebates or discounts available to you through the Victorian Energy Upgrades scheme.
The electrification journey will be unique to each individual household, however we’ve prepared a brief guide to provide an example of what a simple pathway to all-electric might look like.
